Welcome to the Triple Tea Soap Box Series, where you can find opinions boldly brewed.

We kick off this series with the ‘hate’ society gives us. I am confident that both parties can agree America is a bit messy right now. The frustrating job market, cost of living, polarizing political division, and overall mental health crisis.

Recently, I have asked, “what could have caused this state of affairs?” After running various predictions through my head, I believe there is a severe lack of empathy and gratitude among us.

As a refresher, here are the definitions according to Merriam-Webster:

EMPATHY: “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of another in either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experiences fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.”

GRATITUDE: “the state of being gratefulTHANKFULNESS”

What happened to the acts of selflessness and doing the right thing for the benefit of others than yourself? What happened to feeling for others, supporting others, and overall working together towards the greater good? What happened to being thankful and giving back to the community? What happened to ‘paying it forward?’ What happened to smiling at one another?

The amount of time we spend as a society on the negative weights the positive. With that, our mindsets overlook the natural human remorse for those opposing their views. With empathy, we can learn from one another by understanding our situations and discovering why others think differently than us. With gratitude, we become more humble with the cards we are dealt, and naturally, we become motivated to help others who may not have it as well.

Having an open mind to the hate society gives is almost a ‘secret weapon’ to battling the negativity and depression society tries to pour into you. So let’s try these small themes as a base for big change in our world. It won’t solve all of our problems, but having the right mentality can be a start.
